Immaterial and Intangible

October 12, 2019, 8PM/October 13, 2019 3PM

Motion and Migration

December 7, 2019, 8PM/December 8, 2019 3PM

The natural world is a dynamic place. We move, we travel, and we relocate in search of release, inspiration, or a better life. Even stationary objects can move, changing their shape and the picture of a landscape over time. In the same way, music as an artform relies on movement and change over time to create, live in, and alter the various sound worlds it inhabits.

Program:

  • John Fitz Rogers - Once Removed (2003), 9 min, 2 percussionists
  • Paul Kerekes - Trio in Two Parts: I. Turning (2000), 5 min, percussion, cello, piano

  • Anthony R. Green - Return (2011), 8 min, string quartet and clarinet *World Premiere
  • Fjóla Evans - Eroding (2017), 11 min, alto flute, bass clarinet, violin, cello, piano, vibraphone
  • Michael Miller - Spiders (2015), 10 min, flute, bass clarinet, violin, cello, and vibraphone

Dislocation and Defiance

February 1, 2020, 8PM/February 2, 2020 3PM

Most of us will experience some type of dislocative state in our lives–either a psychological feeling that we don’t belong, that we are unwelcome, or a literal displacement due to forces outside of our control. For our third Main Series concert we have programmed works that acknowledge and remember the atrocities of war, hatred, and violence alongside those that inspire us to stand up against it.

Program:

  • Chris Cerrone - Can’t and Won’t (2017), 11 min, string quartet
  • Ted Hearne - The Answer to the Question that Wings Ask (2016), 11 min, string quartet and narrator
  • Sakari Dixon Vanderveer - Feral (2014), 6 min, alto saxophone, violin, viola, cello
  • Mary Kouyoumdjian - Children of Conflict: A Boy and a Makeshift Toy (2015), 10 min, viola and piano
  • Mary Kouyoumdjian - Children of Conflict: Samar’s Song (2015), 4 min, violin and 2 percussionists
  • Marcos Balter - Dreamcatcher (2000), 3 min, piano
  • Anthony R. Green - Collide-oscope II (2016), 9 min, for string trio

Origins and Outlooks

March 21, 2020, 8PM/March 22, 2020 3PM

For our final concert in this series, we have collected works that evoke more specific places and landscapes. Our histories are often bound to our physical surroundings, and several works on this program explore locations in which the composers spent formative years. Other times, we are inspired by travel and new surroundings that allow us to see life from a new angle. Synergy in art comes from both exploring our pasts and seeking new experiences to enhance our understanding of the human experience.

Program:

  • Andrew Norman - The Companion Guide to Rome (2006), 30 min, violin, viola, cello
  • Caroline Shaw - Limestone & Felt (2012), 6 min, viola and cello
  • Annie Clark - Proven Badlands (2011), 7 min, trumpet, flute, clarinet, violin, viola, cello
  • Tyler Capp - Bald Mountain Breakdown (2013), 5 min, violin, cello, piano
  • Magnus Lindberg - Santa Fe Project (2006), 15 min, cello and piano
